Malibu
Broken up into three points, Malibu is one of the renowned surf breaks in California. With all three points bearing a right breaking point break, 1st point is by far the longest and slowest wave out of the three. Because of that, 1st point typically demands long boards to surf, it's not until the waves start growing in size that a short board is preferable. Contradictory to 1st, 2nd and 3rd are best ridden with a short board. One notable factor about Malibu is that whether the waves are big or small, there will almost always be a crowd. Best breaking in the summer.
Topanga
Topanga has a prominent right point break. While featuring a crowd like Malibu, Topanga is much more localized and can be unfriendly to beginner surfers. Unlike most spots, topanga can handle wind and maintain a fun wave. If surfing the point, a short board is highly recommended, but surfing down the line, the waves slow down and a longer board is acceptable.
Sunset
Closer to the Pacific Palisades, Sunset is one the most beginner friendly spots in the local region. It offers a slow crumbly right point break, making longboards the ideal boards to ride. It’s not until the waves get overhead that shortboards are preferable. From beginners to advanced, sunset is a fun wave for all surfers.
Chart House
Below Mastro’s Ocean Club, there is Charthouse (named after the restaurant's former name) a lesser known right breaking reef/point break. While being an excellent wave, the spot rarely breaks unless it's under the correct conditions. Demanding a low tide and S/SW swell. Chart House is on the advanced side for required surf ability. In addition to all the rocks Chart House is a shallow breaking wave, and can be a risky spot to surf.
El Porto
Farther south in Manhattan, El Porto is a beach break that features multiple points up and down the beach. The spot allows for skills levels from beginner to advanced. Due to it being a beach break, El Porto can commonly close out when there aren’t the right sandbar formations. This spot is better in the winter.
